SAMNUC Representatives’ Educational Visit to Parliament of Kenya
On 11th March 2026, representatives from the Student Association of MNUC (SAMNUC) undertook an educational visit to the Senate of Kenya and the National Assembly of Kenya at the Parliament Buildings. The visit formed part of the student leadership’s effort to gain practical exposure to Kenya’s governance and legislative processes.
Purpose of the Visit
The main objective of the visit was to provide student leaders with a deeper understanding of how Kenya’s legislative system operates. As representatives of the student body, the SAMNUC leaders sought to learn how laws are formulated, debated, and enacted within the country’s parliamentary framework. The educational tour also aimed at strengthening the students’ appreciation of leadership, governance, and civic responsibility.
Exposure to the Legislative Process
During the visit, the student leaders were introduced to the roles and functions of the two houses of Parliament. They learned that the Senate primarily represents and protects the interests of counties and oversees the allocation of national revenue to county governments. On the other hand, the National Assembly is responsible for law-making, representation of the people, and oversight of national government institutions.
The students were guided through the chambers and given explanations on how parliamentary sessions are conducted, including the procedures followed when debating bills and motions. They also gained insight into how committees operate and how public participation contributes to the legislative process.
Understanding the Arms of Government
The visit further highlighted the importance of the three arms of government—the Executive, Legislature, and Judiciary—and how they work together to ensure effective governance. Through discussions and observations, the students learned how Parliament exercises oversight over the Executive and ensures accountability in public administration.
Impact on Student Leadership
The experience was both educational and inspiring for the SAMNUC representatives. It provided them with practical knowledge about democratic governance and reinforced the importance of responsible leadership. By observing the operations of Parliament firsthand, the student leaders gained valuable insights that will help them perform their roles more effectively within the student body.
Conclusion
The educational visit to the Senate and the National Assembly was a significant learning opportunity for SAMNUC representatives. It broadened their understanding of Kenya’s legislative processes and strengthened their commitment to leadership, civic engagement, and governance. Such initiatives play an important role in nurturing informed and responsible student leaders who can actively contribute to society and the nation at large.
