As a young public University College, Saturday 5th of March 2022 was a big day for us at Mama Ngina University College (MNUC). We had the honor and privilege of hosting our very first community outreach activity in partnership with the Aga Khan University Hospital Nairobi (AKUHN) at University College grounds, Mutomo, Gatundu South Sub County, Kiambu County.
We executed a successful medical camp with immense support from the AKUHN doctors and nurses who spent the whole day lending their skills to a great cause.
The outreach was a free medical camp that provided numerous services throughout the day, with the main focus being spreading awareness and providing screening for cervical and breast cancer, which is a leading cause of death among cancer patients in the country.
The doctors began by first speaking to the women and creating awareness on different ways of conducting self-evaluations and what to look out for during those evaluations. Afterward, our nurse and those from AKUHN offered an array of medical checks before the screening. These included:
- Blood sugar checks.
- High blood pressure checks.
Once concluded, women proceeded to have their cervical and breast screening during which time they also received nutritional advice. By the end of the day, the medical camp had screened 129 women. Referrals were also made for those that needed them to ensure they got the care and support required moving forward. The community was very grateful for the good work the university had done. They requested more activities also targeting men in the area.
It is of utmost importance to us at MNUC that we are impactful to the community around us, and Saturday was a wonderful day to start with.
It also allowed us to engage with the community further and see what other ways we could assist in ensuring that we have a wholesome, healthy, growing, and nurturing environment.
We have every hope that this will be the first of many wonderful engagements to come.
See you at the next one.
