Prof. Thomas Sakwa

Professional Profile
Professor Thomas W. Sakwa is a Professor of Condensed Matter Physics, university administrator, researcher and higher-education leader with extensive experience in university governance, academic administration, institutional development, research leadership, curriculum development, quality assurance, strategic planning and resource mobilisation.

He currently serves as Deputy Principal of Mama Ngina University College, a position he has held since January 2024. In this capacity, he provides strategic, academic and administrative leadership in support of the University College’s mandate, institutional development, academic quality, governance, resource mobilisation, performance management and preparation for institutional growth and transition. He has also served as Acting Principal of Mama Ngina University College on several occasions.

Professor Sakwa has built a distinguished career in university education spanning teaching, research, postgraduate supervision, academic governance and executive management. His leadership experience extends from departmental and faculty management to campus administration, university-wide academic administration and executive university leadership. His previous senior appointments include Registrar, Academic Affairs; Acting Registrar, Academic Affairs; Campus Coordinator and Director; Founding Dean of the Faculty of Science and  Chairperson of the Department of Physical Sciences at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology and its predecessor institutions.

Academic Qualifications and Scholarly Foundation

Professor Sakwa holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Physics, a Master of Philosophy in Physics, and a Bachelor of Science with First Class Honours, all from Moi University, Kenya. His postgraduate research was grounded in condensed matter and statistical physics, including the study of liquid helium, disordered bosonic systems, Bose-Einstein condensation, spatial ordering and thermodynamic behaviour.

His academic interests have subsequently developed across several areas of theoretical, computational and applied physics. His research interests include high-temperature superconductivity, statistical thermodynamics of binary systems, spatial motion of multi-pendula systems, and the optical properties of titanium-dioxide-based multilayer thin films.

University Leadership and Governance

Professor Sakwa has accumulated substantial experience in university leadership and institutional governance. His work has involved strategic planning, implementation of institutional policies, management of academic programmes, performance contracting, institutional restructuring, resource mobilisation, staff development, governance systems and regulatory compliance.

As Registrar for Academic Affairs and Acting Registrar for Academic Affairs at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology, he provided leadership in Senate affairs, student admissions, examinations, curriculum development, academic quality assurance, graduation processes and implementation of academic policies. Earlier, as Coordinator and Director of the MMUST Webuye Campus, he led institutional restructuring and regulatory alignment, including development of administrative systems and processes consistent with Commission for University Education requirements.

He was the Founding Dean of the Faculty of Science from 2008 to 2014, where he provided academic, research, administrative, financial and strategic leadership. During this period, he also contributed to the establishment and development of emerging academic units, including the School of Health Sciences, School of Nursing and Midwifery, and School of Agriculture, Veterinary Sciences and Technology.

His management experience includes development and implementation of strategic plans, annual work plans, academic plans, budgets and procurement plans; performance management; administration of university examinations; coordination of Senate and committee processes; institutional policy development; systems improvement; staff development; student affairs; and establishment of institutional structures and operational controls.

Academic Quality Assurance and Regulatory Service

Professor Sakwa has significant experience in higher-education quality assurance and university regulation. Since November 2015, he has served as a Peer Reviewer for the Commission for University Education, undertaking assignments relating to academic programme evaluation, curriculum review, institutional quality audits and other higher-education regulatory functions.

He participated in the National Special Quality Audit Inspection of public and private universities in Kenya undertaken by the Commission for University Education in 2017. He has also participated on several occasions in the evaluation of Physics curricula and academic programmes on behalf of the Commission.

Professor Sakwa has additionally served as an External Examiner in Physics for a number of Kenyan universities, including Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology, Karatina University, Kabarak University and the University of Kabianga. Through these assignments, he has contributed to independent evaluation of examinations, academic standards, assessment practices and the quality of university programmes.

Professor Sakwa is an accomplished researcher whose scholarship spans condensed matter physics, superconductivity, statistical thermodynamics, quantum systems, advanced materials, thin-film technologies and related areas of theoretical and applied physics.

His curriculum vitae records an extensive portfolio of peer-reviewed scholarly publications, including research on Bose-Einstein systems, liquid helium, high-temperature superconductors, heavy fermion systems, thermodynamic properties of quantum systems, nanomaterials, titanium dioxide thin films, energy systems and computational physics.

A significant component of his academic contribution has been the development of postgraduate researchers. His CV records supervision of numerous doctoral and master’s candidates, including completed and ongoing research projects, as well as examination of seven doctoral theses and twenty-two master’s-level theses.

He has also contributed to academic knowledge products and teaching resources, including work associated with Fundamentals of Physics Laboratory Guide and the development of teaching materials and manuscripts in physics.

He has chaired and participated in committees responsible for funding proposals, equipment acquisition and capacity-building initiatives. In 2014, he served as a Visiting Professor at Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences in Finland under the North-South-South Teacher Exchange Programme. The engagement involved lectures, seminars, scholarly interaction and benchmarking in teaching, research, experiential learning, innovation and academic quality assurance.

He also undertook a visiting professorship and sabbatical appointment at the University of Kabianga, where he participated in teaching, research, curriculum engagement and scholarly collaboration.

His international scientific and technical exposure includes advanced training at the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Trieste, Italy, as well as intensive renewable-energy training at the National Institute of Solar Energy in Gurugram, India, under the Third India-Africa Forum Summit framework.

Sakwa is an ordained Minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and serves as the Lead Minister of Oasis of Healing and Restoration Ministries. His ministry is centred on the preaching and teaching of the Word of God, prayer, discipleship, spiritual mentorship, leadership development and the equipping of believers for effective Christian service. He is actively involved in training and mentoring pastors, church leaders and ministry workers, as well as providing spiritual leadership, counselling and guidance to individuals, families and Christian communities.
