Established in 1991 by African Union, the International Day of the African Child has been observed annually on June 16. The event honors African children who lost their lives or were injured while advocating for the right to quality education and learning in their native languages, in 1976 Soweto uprising in South Africa. The day also reminds us of our commitment to continuous protection and promotion of children rights. The theme of this year’s events is Education for All Children in Africa: The Time is Now MNUC led by the Principal, Prof. Zipporah Ng’ang’a and the Deputy Principal Prof. Thomas Sakwa, in collaboration with likeminded partners, held the commemoration event on June 14, 2024, that took place at Mutomo Primary School grounds.
The event was attended by representatives from 11 schools, including 6 primary schools and 5 secondary schools, and the total attendance of over 500 people. The day began with mentorship sessions for both teachers and students conducted by MNUC staff, student and IEEE Kenyatta University (KU) Student Chapter members. The day’s entertainment was provided by pupils and students from various schools and with advocacy message for education for all children in Africa.
The Guest speaker was Dr. John Muiruri, Country Director for Children in Conflict (AFCIC) who inspired all actors to play their role to ensure children enjoy their right to education.
